Advanced Recovery Modalities

Technology That Supports Healing, Recovery, and Performance

At Performance and Recovery Clinic, advanced recovery modalities are used as part of a comprehensive musculoskeletal treatment plan—not as isolated, one-size-fits-all treatments.

Our goal is to combine sports chiropractic care, movement assessment, manual therapy, rehabilitation, and modern recovery technology to help active people recover more completely and return to the activities they enjoy. Depending on your condition and goals, your appointment may include tools such as PEMF/PMST therapy, Class III laser/infrared therapy, Normatec compression therapy, and other supportive modalities.

These services may be included as part of a comprehensive appointment when they are clinically appropriate for your injury, tissue sensitivity, stage of healing, and recovery goals.

Why We Use Advanced Modalities

Pain and injury often involve more than one tissue or system. Joint restriction, soft tissue irritation, swelling, poor circulation, muscle guarding, reduced mobility, and decreased strength can all affect how the body heals and performs.

Advanced modalities may help support the recovery process by:

  • Improving local circulation

  • Supporting tissue recovery

  • Reducing muscle guarding

  • Calming irritated tissues

  • Improving comfort before movement or rehab

  • Supporting recovery after training or treatment

  • Helping patients tolerate progressive exercise

These tools are not meant to replace hands-on care, rehab, or proper evaluation. Instead, they help create a better environment for healing and movement.

Our Advanced Modalities

PEMF / PMST Therapy

PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate tissues at the cellular level. PMST is a more targeted form of pulsed magnetic stimulation used to support musculoskeletal recovery.

At Performance and Recovery Clinic, PEMF/PMST may be used to support comfort, tissue recovery, and neuromuscular function in selected cases.

It may be considered for:

  • Muscle soreness

  • Joint irritation

  • Recovery after activity

  • Chronic musculoskeletal discomfort

  • Tissue sensitivity

  • Supportive care during injury recovery

PEMF/PMST is most useful when paired with movement, rehab, and an appropriate treatment plan.

What are the benefits of PEMF therapy for athletes?

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy offers several benefits for athletes, including enhanced recovery, pain reduction, improved performance, reduced inflammation, injury prevention, and better sleep and stress reduction.

Enhanced Recovery: PEMF therapy accelerates muscle repair by stimulating cellular metabolism and increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production[2]. Research demonstrates that PEMF therapy increases protein synthesis by up to 70%, directly supporting muscle repair and growth[2]. Athletes using PEMF typically report reduced muscle soreness within 24-48 hours post-exercise, compared to 72-96 hours with conventional recovery methods[2].

Pain Reduction: In a clinical study, over 75% of participants experienced significant reductions in pain intensity and improved function after just 12 PEMF sessions[4]. PEMF reduces pain by decreasing inflammation and promoting tissue repair[1], while also reducing lactic acid buildup[3].

Improved Performance: PEMF supports endurance by enhancing oxygen utilization and supporting mitochondrial function[2]. Regular PEMF sessions can increase mitochondrial density and efficiency, directly translating to improved endurance performance[2]. Athletes also report enhanced mental focus and clarity, essential components for peak athletic performance[3].

Reduced Inflammation: PEMF therapy addresses chronic inflammation by modulating the inflammatory cascade at the cellular level[2], which is one of the most significant barriers to athletic performance and recovery[2].

Injury Prevention: By improving circulation and tissue oxygenation, PEMF helps prevent overuse injuries[1]. The enhanced blood flow delivers essential nutrients and oxygen while removing metabolic waste products that contribute to soreness and fatigue[2].

Better Sleep and Stress Reduction: Athletes using PEMF therapy report falling asleep 30-50% faster and experiencing more consistent sleep throughout the night[2]. PEMF also helps reduce the mental impacts of injury through relaxation[7].

Non-Invasive Approach: PEMF is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option, which is particularly important for athletes who wish to avoid medication side effects or risks associated with invasive procedures[6].

Class III Laser / Infrared Therapy

Class III laser and infrared therapy use light energy to support cellular activity and local tissue recovery. This modality may be used for irritated muscles, joints, tendons, or soft tissues when the goal is to reduce sensitivity and improve comfort.

Laser/infrared therapy may be incorporated when appropriate for:

  • Soft tissue irritation

  • Joint discomfort

  • Muscle tension

  • Tendon-related pain

  • Recovery support

  • Areas that are too sensitive for more aggressive treatment

Laser therapy is gentle, non-invasive, and often used alongside chiropractic care, manual therapy, shockwave therapy, or rehabilitation.

Normatec Compression Therapy

Normatec compression therapy uses dynamic air compression to help move fluid through the limbs and support recovery. It is commonly used by athletes and active individuals after training, competition, travel, or periods of high physical demand.

Compression therapy may help support:

  • Circulation

  • Muscle recovery

  • Leg heaviness or fatigue

  • Post-training recovery

  • Swelling management when appropriate

  • Relaxation and recovery between sessions

Normatec is often used as a recovery tool for runners, cyclists, skiers, hikers, and active patients who want to keep moving well.

How Modalities Fit Into a Comprehensive Appointment

Advanced modalities are often most effective when combined with a complete treatment strategy.

A comprehensive appointment may include:

  • Movement assessment

  • Sports chiropractic care

  • Manual therapy

  • Focused ESWT/shockwave therapy when appropriate

  • Rehab or corrective exercise

  • PEMF/PMST therapy

  • Laser/infrared therapy

  • Compression therapy

  • Home-care recommendations

This layered approach allows us to address pain, mobility, tissue sensitivity, strength, and recovery from multiple angles.

The goal is not just to feel better for a few hours. The goal is to improve how your body moves, recovers, adapts, and performs over time.

Supporting Tissue Healing and Injury Recovery

Different injuries require different types of support. An acute flare-up, chronic tendon problem, irritated joint, overworked muscle, or post-training recovery session may each call for a different combination of care.

Advanced modalities may be used to help support recovery from:

  • Sports injuries

  • Overuse injuries

  • Muscle strains

  • Joint irritation

  • Tendon pain

  • Back and neck pain

  • Post-training soreness

  • Chronic soft tissue irritation

  • Recovery between events or competitions

We choose the tools based on your exam findings, tissue response, and goals.
